Building a certificate of deposit ladder

Balance higher rates with regular access to cash.

A ladder divides savings into certificates with different maturity dates. When the shortest matures, you reinvest it in the longest term, so something matures on a regular schedule.

Example: $20,000 divided into four $5,000 certificates of 6, 12, 24 and 36 months. Each time one matures you can spend it or renew at the longest term.
